When 'LOC: Kargil' was shot in freezing conditions:Akshaye, Ajay and others filmed at 14,000 feet up; Sanjay Dutt did stunts despite knee injury

Did you know one of Bollywood’s longest films was a 4-hour-15-minute war epic with nearly 40 actors? 2003 war film ‘LOC: Kargil,’ directed by JP Dutta, brought together some of the biggest names in Hindi cinema to tell the story of the Kargil War. As we celebrate India’s Independence Day on 15 August, let’s know about this film and the untold stories behind it. A 4-hour-15-minute tribute to the Kargil War Veteran filmmaker, writer and producer JP Dutta made only 10 feature films in his career, many of which centred on the country and its armed forces. While Border went on to become a landmark war film, JP Dutta later attempted something even more ambitious with LOC: Kargil. Based on the story of Indian soldiers at Kargil and their war efforts against Pakistan (Operation Vijay), the movie attempted to give each character a good background story. The film, which runs for 4 hours and 15 minutes, showed the events of the Kargil War. Notably, JP Dutta is also known for establishing the trend of large-scale war films in Bollywood. However, making LOC: Kargil was not a cakewalk. After films such as Yateem, Batwara and Hathyar failed at the box office, several people were reluctant to associate themselves with this ambitious project. As many as 19 actors reportedly turned down the film, with some considering its subject weak, while others had scheduling issues. Why did Salman Khan reject the film? According to IMDB, Salman Khan was reportedly the first actor JP Dutta approached for LOC: Kargil. However, he wanted Salman to work on the film without charging a fee. Salman reportedly questioned why he should do the film for free when the makers would not distribute it to distributors for free. He ultimately chose not to be part of the project. One of Bollywood’s biggest star casts The film also held the distinction of being the most expensive Hindi film until December 2003. Despite its scale, patriotic theme and enormous star cast, the film did not perform well at the box office. Real weapons were used in the movie According to the IMDB, real ammunition and weapons were used in this movie. Real Bofors FH-77B artillery were shown but the firing sequences were stock footage. According to Hindustan Times, Sanjay Kapoor, who played Major Deepak Rampal, shared that while shooting in Ladakh alongside real soldiers, Kapoor and co-star Saif Ali Khan experienced military life firsthand, even using live ammunition. The true story behind the engagement ring The emotional movie scene where Captain Anuj Nayyar (played by Saif Ali Khan) hands his engagement ring to Colonel Bawa (Kiran Kumar) is entirely true. Before heading into battle, the real-life Captain Nayyar entrusted his ring to his commander. He explained that he did not want the enemy to capture it and promised to reclaim it once he returned. Sadly, he sacrificed his life, making the ring a lasting symbol of his bravery. Shot under gruelling conditions in Leh and Ladakh LOC: Kargil was shot in the challenging terrains of Leh and Ladakh, with the cast and crew working under harsh weather and difficult conditions. The film’s massive scale and realistic locations added to its impact. Actors worked closely with actual Indian Army personnel during production. Sanjay Kapoor shared further that facing the harsh, high-altitude terrain made he realised the immense sacrifices soldiers make daily. Filled with deep gratitude, the actor recalled that the film's cast was far more eager to click pictures with the real-life war heroes than vice versa. Truly memorable experience - Abhishek Bachchan Abhishek Bachchan, who played Vikram Batra in the film, had earlier shared a post on the 20th anniversary of the film's release, "Making the film with so many friends was truly memorable. But even more, I was proud to be able to tell the story of the real heroes of the Indian Armed Forces. Thank you, J.P. Dutta, for choosing me and making me a part of this film." I am grateful for the friends I made in this journey – Ajay Devgan Ajay Devgn, who played Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey in the film, had shared some photos from the set.
